Paris Cameron-Gardos PhD

Portrait of Paris Cameron-Gardos

I am an experienced researcher with broad interests in culture, film, history, politics, and queer studies. My 2019 doctoral dissertation was a demonstration of my commitment to the successful on-time completion of a clearly defined project.

Background

I am a Canadian and Hungarian. I was born and grew up in Canada. I completed my BA in Toronto and my MA in Montréal. After traveling for a number of years, I started my PhD research in 2014 at the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis in the Netherlands.

Researcher

As a researcher, I place a strong value on interdisciplinary analysis. I believe that the open exchange of ideas and experiences can create genuine opportunities to share knowledge.

As a doctoral researcher, I sought out innovative methods to communicate my findings to both the academic community and the general public in order to inspire engagement.

Doctoral Dissertation

My dissertation, Way Out: Re-Iterative Coming Out in Queer European Cinema, is an interdisciplinary examination of both homoerotic desire and agency as they appear in different kinds of gay coming-out stories in film and television. My chosen objects of study were three films: Summer Storm (2004), Brotherhood (2009), and North Sea Texas (2011). I demonstrate how the use of the concepts of repetition and adaptation in these narratives opens up new ways to understand coming out as an act that always contains elements of success, failure, and is never finished.

Experience Matters

Skills

In my work, communications and research always go together. I have collaborated closely with colleagues and members of the broader community to help demonstrate the importance of cultural analysis, literary studies, and queer studies in today’s world. I created new forms of analysis and laid the groundwork for future investigations through the formulation of detailed research questions and innovative methodologies.

Skills IT and Languages

I have integrated different media into my research and scholarship by working with the Cloud, a variety of presentation applications, and by my strong familiarity with Word and various companion applications.

My mother tongue is English; I’m fluent in French and I have a basic working knowledge of German.
